Final Reflection:

Experience: I think Publishing Design has certainly been a very meaningful experience. I was a bit apprehensive at first because the assignments looked quite heavy and taxing. The experience of writing and illustrating your own book was so much fun. I love to draw and I really enjoyed creating all those visuals for my book. It was nice to take the concept, illustrate all the visuals and then layout and design the book. The exercises were also a quick way to learn a lot of the concepts and practices of Publishing Design. The signature folds exercise was something I have never done before and it was interesting to see that that's how books are mass printed and compiled.

Observation: I observed that I actually enjoyed book designing an illustration. This was a field of graphic design I had not really considered or pondered much on before but after this module, I started observing all the various aspects of design that goes in publishing content. I'm an avid reader and I now notice carefully how margins are in different books and how it differs with the type of content. I also got to observe my classmates work and see all their different approaches to their stories and visuals. I could recognise how I differ from my classmates in my perception and approach of things. It was refreshing to see what stories my classmates were writing and illustrating.

Findings: As mentioned above, I found myself really enjoying Task 3A and it opened a new avenue of graphic design for me. I learnt that book design and publishing design in general is a cool way to combine illustration and graphic design. Although I know that my work is far from perfect, I can say for sure I have learnt a lot from this module. I found that sometimes layouts and grids are a bit hard for me to understand and conceptualise. I guess I just need to keep practising and understanding how these tools can be used to supplement a layout.

Overall, although difficult, this module has been a great learning experience. It was frustrating at times but rewarding to see all your work come together. I can say for sure that I have learnt lessons that I'll always remember.

Thank you, Mr Vinod.
