Project #2:
For this project, we are collaborating with the Food Sciences students and creating packaging for a product they have come up with. We teamed up with the Okara group. They are creating cookies from Okara, which is a leftover product of soybean production.

However, after this briefing, they informed us that they want to go with something more innovative so they decided to do an ice-cream sandwich using the Okara cookies. We started work on the brand name and design direction.
Fig 1.1: Our Miro board brainstorming and ideas
We decided on a minimalist packaging and sent our ideas in a proposal to the FS students.

They liked our ideas and chose the name OKASHI so we proceeded with researching more about minimalism and other aspects of the brand.

With this done, we started working on the packaging design. We assigned ourselves roles and tracked our progress and information.

We also went over to the Food Sciences Lab and got to try the product + meet our partners. Wendy took some pictures and edited them so we could include them in our packaging.
Fig 1.5: Okara Ice Cream Sandwich
We discussed amongst ourselves the packaging and decided to include the Seigaiha pattern. In Japanese culture, it represents peace and we liked the idea of including it to show how okara helps in maintaining peace and balance between food waste.
Simultaneously, I was working on the logo. We all sketched out some ideas first and discussed with Mr Shamsul in picking one.

He liked an idea I had proposed so I worked on digitalising it and working on a coloured version.

With the logo done, we worked on the packaging and decided to come up with a square one and a cuboid one and to present both to our FS partners.

With all of us completing our individual tasks, we worked on the final presentation.

Feedback:
Week #7: After brainstorming our logo ideas, Mr Shamsul gave us feedback on them. He liked the simple minimalist one. He said that now we need to start working on digitalising and adding colour to it. He also advised us to get started on our packaging.
Week #9: This week we showed Mr Shamsul our illustration progress. He suggested that we can try and get some photographs of the product so we set up a meeting with the food science students. he is happy with the logo and packaging so far. He suggested we readjust the position of the wave pattern a bit but other than that it's ok.
Week #10: We showed Mr Shamsul the pictures Wendy took and he liked the way they looked. He suggested we edit them a bit in photoshop and change the colour tones a bit. They are working well with our packaging and now we can get ready for our presentation.
Week #10B: After our presentation, we got feedback from the Food Sciences module leader. She was quite pleased with our packaging and really liked the fact that we did 2 and got their opinion on it. Overall, we got positive feedback and our presentation went really well.
Reflection:
Experience: I am glad the experience working with my group mates was a fun one. Although it did get quite stressful in the end, we all came together and did our best. It was really nice getting to visit the Food Sciences lab and try the product. Getting to see the packaging come together, in the end, was really cool and I'm glad the FS partners like it.
Observations: A big thing I do now after this module is really observe all the packaging I see. It is quite interesting to look at them and analyse them now that I know about all the processes behind them. I also like to determine whether a packaging is designed well or not and what I would change about it.
Findings: I found that packaging design is definitely a lot more complicated that I thought. There are so many considerations and tiny details that must be carefully looked at. I am glad that my group worked hard on it and made sure to consider all the details. I did find myself frustrated when our FS partners kept changing details about the product. However, that is just how it is, so we decided to just work through it together.
