Task #1 Exercises

Information design

Lectures:

Week #1: We got a briefing and overview of our module by Miss Anis. She also introduced our first exercises to us that we will be working on. We formed groups for our final project and discussed topics and ideas with Mr. Shamsul.

Week #2: Some groups will be presenting their flip projects and my group will prepare for ours next week.

Instructions:

Exercise 1: Quantifying data — Infographics

We had to create an infographic from a "Jar of Stuff".

Fig 1.0: Draft work

I decided to categorise my pens by first if they have a lid or do they click. I then added subcategories of the various different types. I showed Ms. Anis and she said it was good and I could go ahead with it.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H. Poster

We had to create an infographic poster that used at least 4 of the L.A.T.C.H concepts. Miss Anis said we could use any set of data and she also provided us with some resources. I used the Pokidex and decided to classify Pokemon. I first sketched out my idea.

Fig 1.2: Initial sketch

I wanted to create a sort of landscape within the Pokeball and highlight all the places different types of Pokemon can be found. I used Procreate to refine my sketch a bit more and come up with the final illustration I would use in my poster.

Fig 1.3: Final Illustration

I then took this image and put it into Adobe Illustrator to add the necessary information and any other graphical elements. After consultation with Miss Anis, she said she liked it but I should make sure to add the names of the Pokemon instead of just their images so its easy for people who don't know much about Pokemon to understand.

Exercise 3: Voiceover — Kinetic typography

For this exercise, Mr. Shamsul gave us an audio clip and we had to come up with a typographic video using Adobe After Effects.

Feedback:

Week #1: Miss Anis said that my infographic design with the pens was good and I can carry on with it and make it into the final

Week #2: My final infographic design was reviewed by Miss Anis and she said that it was looking good and that I can move on to my other exercises.

Week 3&4: I got feedback on both my LATCH poster and the voiceover video. Miss Anis said that the LATCH poster was good and that she liked my illustration style. She said I should add the names of the Pokemon to the poster to make it a bit easier to understand. For my voiceover, Mr. Shamsul said that the layout and timing was nice but the colours were a bit too striking and mismatched.

Reflection:

Week #1: This module seems a bit stressful so far since we don't have a lot of time and a lot of motion graphics is involved. I am not super comfortable with After Effects so I hope I get to become more comfortable as this module progresses.

Week #2: The infographic exercise seems to be a simple and easy start to the module. Most of us finished it quite quickly so we have more time for our next exercise which is the LATCH poster.

Week #3&4: These two weeks involved quite a bit of work with After Effects and I think I have gotten more comfortable with and can create basic and simple motion graphics but I definitely have a long way to go as some of the motion graphics my classmates produced were amazing and I want to be on that level too. The LATCH poster was a fun exercise that I really enjoyed and I am pretty comfortable with using Illustrator now to create infographics.
