1. Lectures

Composition

This week with Miss Anis we learnt about the elements of composition such as middle ground, foreground and background. The balance between negative and positive space is very important when creating a visually pleasing composition. To see the spaces we can apply the previous technique of Chiaroscuro. High contrast allows us to identify these spaces much more easily.

2. Tutorial/Practical

Mr. Faizul showed us sketching techniques on Photoshop and told us to create at least 5 experimental sketches before we start on our final one.

I sketched out a few ideas I had

Fig 1.2 Sketch 2

Fig 1.3: Sketch 3

Fig 1.4: Sketch 4

Fig 1.5: Sketch 5

I liked sketch 5 the most so I started working on developing it a little bit more. I wanted to have a distinct colour palette for this work. I decided to experiment with two.

Fig 1.8: Landscape using palette 1

I liked how this landscape turned out but I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, it looked a bit too simple to me so I tried one of my other sketches.

Fig 1.9: Second Landscape

I liked this landscape too as I thought it had more structure to it but I still wasn't satisfied with the outcome as they weren't very visually interesting to me. I looked into some of the inspiration Miss Anis provided us with.

These sketches were simple but still had a lot of detail which made them visually interesting. I decided to try again and sketch something new.

Fig 2.2: New sketch

I sketched out a street and i really liked how it turned out. It definitely looked more interesting than my previous ideas. I started colouring it in on Ai.

Feedback:

Miss Anis and Mr. Faizul said that they were generally impressed with the overall standard of the work we have submitted so far so that is reassuring

Reflection:

At first I was a bit confused regarding vector shapes and landscapes, but through using Ai again and again I think I have gotten much better at it and hopefully it will be easier in the future. I enjoyed making this landscape and I think I learnt quite a few new skills during this exercise.
